== Mainline Linux vs Android-based kernels == One important topic in Linux phones is whether the device can run a mainline or near-mainline Linux kernel. A phone with good mainline Linux support can usually receive improvements from the wider Linux kernel community and may be easier to maintain long-term. Many phones, however, depend on vendor kernels originally made for Android. These kernels may include device-specific patches that are difficult to update or maintain. Because of this, two phones may both “run Linux” but have very different levels of long-term support and openness.
